On 11th March 2020 a scheduled upgrade to the GX/JX network from software version 1.4 to 1.6 was started. During this upgrade there was an outage on March 11th 2020 at 22.39 UTC which was expected. Once the software upgrade was successful, part of the final test was a site switch to move the traffic from Inmarsat’s ground site in Fucino to Nemea.
Once this site switch was made to Fucino on March 12th 2020 at 05:48 UTC there was an un-expected outage which pushed terminals to the IOR region. An investigation was immediately carried out to locate the source of this issue. In the meantime, to protect the services and resolve the issue a site switch was made to move the traffic back to Inmarsat’s site in Fucino at 05:58 UTC. The cause was identified as a bug in the Cisco router which has since been rectified.
